Benefits and extra help

Can I see a social worker?

Our social workers can assess your needs and arrange appropriate services. They can also answer your questions about claiming benefits while in hospital. To contact a social worker call 020 7794 0500 (extension 33644) between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.

Can I still get my pension?

Yes, you can still receive a pension while you are in hospital. If you have no relatives to pick up your pension, the hospital's cashier office can collect it on your behalf. Please ask a nurse to help you.

Can I still claim benefits?

Benefits are often still payable while you are in hospital, but there are exceptions. Please ask your local DWP office if you have any queries.

Benefits advice at the patient's bedside

Job Centre Plus now provide a service at the Royal Free. This service is set up for all patients, particularly in-patients who would like to discuss or enquire about a benefits claim. Surgeries are held fortnightly on Thursdays.

Patients who want a visit from the service can request this through the ward who will complete the referral form & fax it to PALS who will in turn pass all referrals to Jobcentreplus before the surgery dates.

Medical certificates

If your employer or the DWP require a medical certificate as proof of your stay in hospital, please ask a nurse.
