Clinical biochemistry

Information and service overview

The department of clinical biochemistry provides a comprehensive analytical & clinical interpretive service to clinicians within the Royal Free and its associated satellite units.

Clinical Biochemistry is one of 6 discrete pathology disciplines and is situated on the 1st floor (blue zone) of the Royal Free Hospital. Central Pathology Reception is now also incorporated into this area. The department is fully CPA accredited and the service is provided and supported by 60 medical and scientific staff providing a comprehensive analytical and clinical advisory service.

As well as advice in routine diagnostic clinical biochemistry, endocrinology and metabolism, particular expertise is offered in the fields of lipoproteins and cardiovascular disease, toxicology, protein analysis and hormone assays.

The department is open between 9.00am and 5.30pm weekdays (excluding public holidays). A 24-hour emergency on-call service is also available backed up with consultant support.

The department hosts the Supra Regional Assay Service for Cardiovascular Biomarkers which provides a nationally recognised specialist clinical and laboratory service. For further information refer to: http://www.sas-centre.org/centres/london_royal_free.html
