Patient choice - why choose the Royal Free?

NHS patients in England can choose from several hospitals when their GPs refer them for specialist treatment.

Here are the top reasons to choose the Royal Free:

World class care and expertise

The Royal Free is a major teaching hospital and one of five world-renowned organisations in Europe's largest health science partnerships, UCL Partners. This means our patients have access to leading specialists and the latest drugs and treatments linked to world-class medical research and innovation. More about UCL Partners

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and in the latest annual ratings, this time by the Care Quality Commission, received 'excellent' for the quality of our services for the third year running.

We are one of the country's leading centres for a range of specialist services including all aspects of transplantation, liver and pancreatic surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, infectious diseases and immunology.

Patient safety

The Royal Free is a clean and safe hospital that puts patient safety first. We have the lowest mortality rates of all NHS trusts in the country (Dr Foster Hospital Guide 2009) and one of the lowest MRSA bacteraemia rates.

We pride ourselves on our infection control record. The trust was one of the first NHS trusts to introduce deep cleaning of wards and "bare below the elbows" for staff. In 2009, the intensive care unit went for more than a year with no MRSA blood stream infections. Our infection control nursing team won the Nursing Times Infection Control Team of the Year Award 2009. The trust continually invests in preventing all avoidable infections.

A pleasant environment

The Royal Free works hard to provide a pleasant and welcoming environment for patients and visitors. The trust's hospitals - the Royal Free and the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital - have consistently scored high marks in annual assessments (the PEAT inspection) for quality of food and cleanliness, achieving an 'excellent' rating for food and 'good' rating for cleanliness on both sites in 2010.

Our staff aim to provide a caring, friendly and helpful service, and to give clear information and explanations. A key priority of the trust is to ensure that patients' privacy is respected and that patients are treated with dignity and respect at all times.

Fast referrals

To make an appointment at the Royal Free you will need an appointment reference number, two-word password and details of the chosen service from your GP. Read more about out-patient appointments.

Getting here

If you choose the Royal Free or our other hospital, the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, for your treatment then public transport is the best way of getting here as it is for getting to most London hospitals.

Although we have car parking at the Royal Free site, it is very limited. Detailed information on how to get to our hospitals.
