We would like to confirm that our patient William Pooley is in good spirits. He is sitting up and talking to the nurses and doctors who are looking after him.

After careful consideration William decided that he would like to take the experimental drug ZMapp and he took the first dose of the drug on Monday. Further doses are expected to be given to William in due course.

Dr Mike Jacobs, infectious diseases consultant at the Royal Free London, said: “We are giving him the very best care possible. However, the next few days will be crucial. The disease has a variable course and we will know much more in a week’s time.

“Will is in a stable position and we are very pleased with where he is, we couldn’t hope for more. He is clearly a resilient and remarkable young man.”
