A dietetic service is provided to the care of the elderly wards. In this patient group malnutrition is a key problem as there are many factors that can affect their eating including:
- Depression
- Confusion
- Constipation
- Loss of sense (taste, smell and thirst)
- Drug side effects
- Pain
- Poor dental fixtures
- Swallowing difficulties
The dietitian provides nutrition support either orally or via a feeding tube if needed. Advice is tailored to each patient to ensure that they meet their nutritional requirements.
