Nutrition and dietetics - Health Services for Elderly People (HSEP)

A dietetic service is provided to the care of the elderly wards. In this patient group malnutrition is a key problem as there are many factors that can affect their eating including:

  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Loss of sense (taste, smell and thirst)
  • Drug side effects
  • Pain
  • Poor dental fixtures
  • Swallowing difficulties

The dietitian provides nutrition support either orally or via a feeding tube if needed. Advice is tailored to each patient to ensure that they meet their nutritional requirements.
