The infectious diseases service at the Royal Free Hospital looks after adult patients (16 years or older) with all types of infection or suspected infection.
The team consists of five consultants with supporting specialist registrars and senior house officers, and an in-patient unit with dedicated nurses trained in the care of patients with infectious diseases.
The unit has considerable experience in caring for patients with:
- infections acquired in the UK
- illnesses acquired overseas and in the tropics
- viral illnesses
- bacterial illnesses
- viral hepatitis
- fevers of unknown origin
In addition, the unit works closely with other departments across the Royal Free London to provide a comprehensive infection service to all patients with infections related to other medical conditions. We also have a high level isolation unit (HLIU) used for the treatment of infectious diseases.
