Palliative care

Overview

What is palliative care?

Palliative care refers to the support we give to those with a life-threatening or terminal illness. It is a form of end of life care which focuses on pain relief and supporting patients and their family, friends and carers with the effects of terminal illness.

Palliative care is often associated with patients undergoing cancer treatment – but we provide end of life care for any condition that patients can't recover from.

NHS end of life care: helping you cope with terminal illness

The palliative care team has specialist skills in pain relief and symptom management and provides emotional support and advice on terminal illness.

Our team works closely with the occupational therapy and physiotherapy departments, as well as chaplaincy teams and community palliative care services, including local hospices and community providers.

Palliative care: our team of medical specialists

The palliative care team is a multidisciplinary service that works across all three hospitals in our trust – Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

The team works closely with all health care professionals involved in a patient's end of life care. GPs or hospital consultants remain responsible for clinical care and treatment, and any suggested changes will be discussed fully with them.

Referrals

Referral details

Referrals to the palliative care team for community or in-patient advice can be made by any health care professional with the agreement of the doctor responsible for the patient’s care. Out-patient appointments can be made following a referral from a GP. Tertiary referrals are also available.

We also have a cancer services directory which was designed for healthcare professionals. It has full listings of all contact numbers for cancer and haematology at the trust.
