E-cigarettes or electronic cigarettes are nicotine containing battery operated device which simulate smoking without the exhaled carbon monoxide (exhaled smoke), what you exhale instead is water vapour which is heated through the filament as you inhale. However the safety of these devices is under investigation and they are currently unlicensed products. Therefore e-cigarettes are not a stop smoking aid.
Because e-cigarettes are currently unlicensed products, we do not know the substances and quantity that goes into manufacturing the various products/brands currently being sold. The regulation will be coming in in 2016 so until the products are regulated we cannot advise physical or environmental safety of the product.
Our patients are welcome to use an e-cigarette alongside their smoking cessation treatment. There are lots of different brands and types of e-cigarettes on the market and you can buy them from various locations, the NHS do not advise patients to use e-cigarettes therefore we cannot advice you on what brand to use to where to purchase from.
