Same-sex hospital accommodation

Same-sex accommodation means when you stay in hospital you will share the room or hospital ward where you sleep with members of the same sex. Same-sex toilets and bathrooms will also be close to your bed area.

At Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust we understand that many people feel more comfortable sharing hospital rooms with people of the same sex. That’s why our hospitals provide patients with same-sex accommodation. It helps our hospitals in London to ensure that patient dignity and privacy is respected. It makes staying in hospital more comfortable and the experience of treatment better.

Accommodation with mixed sex beds will happen only when there is a clear clinical need. This could happen where a patient’s care means they need specialist medical equipment, such as intensive care or when patients choose to share an area, for example for kidney dialysis treatment.
