Health services for elderly people

We provide physiotherapy for patients on the acute elderly wards. In addition we have a rapid response service that assesses and treats these patients on admission to the Medical Acute Assessment Unit (MAAU) and throughout the hospital with mobility issues. An early enablement team has recently been established to treat patients who require more intensive physiotherapy input to facilitate discharge from the hospital.

All physiotherapists work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and each patient will have an individualised assessment and treatment plan based on their specific needs or goals. Patients may have complex issues including neurological, respiratory or orthopaedic problems. They may be referred onto physiotherapy services within the community or transferred to another healthcare facility for further rehabilitation if appropriate.

There is a system of “blanket” referral for in-patients, this means that the patients on each ward are considered on a daily basis, and their need for physiotherapy is assessed.

The therapy office is situated on the 7th floor of the Royal Free Hospital.
