The Royal Free Hospital is one of a very few specialist hospitals in the UK for patients with liver failure or in need of a transplant. Patients are transferred to our liver critical care unit (LCCU) from across the south of England.
Common reasons patients are referred to LCCU are:
- acute liver failure
- complications of chronic liver disease (like cirrhosis)
- need for a liver transplant
- need for complex liver, gall bladder or pancreas surgery
Our patients are cared for by doctors and nurses with expertise in caring for patients very ill with liver disease.
The multidisciplinary teams have daily meetings with hepatologists and liver surgeons to plan the best possible care for our patients.
