Our diabetes service cares for people wo are living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes so they can live a healthy and fulfilled life.

We are a centre of excellence for patients with type 1 diabetes, treating patients locally and from across the UK.

Our team of doctors, specialist nurses, dieticians, podiatrists and clinical psychologists provide extensive inpatient and outpatient services, working closely with other hospital departments, local healthcare organisations and primary care colleagues.

New referrals are seen in outpatient clinics at Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, Edgware Community Hospital, Finchley Memorial Hospital, Potters Bar Community Hospital or the Royal Free Hospital.

We run specialist transition clinics, aimed at helping young patients come to terms with their illness and matching their treatment to adult life, as well as antenatal, renal and diabetic foot clinics.

Our patients are supported by a multi-disciplinary diabetes team to manage their condition who take part in education, training and research to the benefit of those they care for.

Referrals to the diabetes team can be made via a GP or hospital doctor. Patients cannot be seen without an appointment.

GP referrals should be made through the NHS e-Referral service. These will be booked into a triage appointment in the first instance.

At this stage, you should not attend the hospital or expect a call as this is for the consultant to look at your referral and decide what the next steps should be. This could be some tests, an appointment or advice for your GP.

Tertiary referrals from other hospital consultants are also available.

The Camden diabetes IPU (integrated practice unit) provides support to adults with (mainly) type 2 diabetes in the community to manage their condition, aiming at avoiding hospital admissions and preventing long-term complications.

It is run by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, with advice and support from diabetes teams from the Royal Free London, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Haverstock Healthcare.

Teams across primary, community and hospital settings work together to support and educate GPs, practice nurses and community nurses to increase their knowledge and confidence in diabetes management. This allows hospital teams to focus on improving inpatient care for people with diabetes
