Diabetes services for adults
Overview
The diabetes service provides extensive in-patient and out-patient services using a multidisciplinary approach that covers all aspects of diabetes care for adults.
New referrals are seen in out-patient clinics at Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, Edgware Community Hospital, Finchley Hospital, Potters Bar Community Hospital or the Royal Free Hospital. Patients who require in-patient treatment are admitted to either Barnet Hospital or Chase Farm Hospital where there is a dedicated team of nurses.
A team of professionals work within the diabetes department including specialist nurses, dietitians, podiatrists, a clinical psychologist and a medical team of consultants supported by secretarial staff.
We run specialists clinics including ante-natal, renal, foot and adolescent clinics, aimed at helping young patients come to terms with their illness and match their treatment to adult life.
The diabetes department aims to improve the health of people with diabetes via education, training, research and through the service it provides. The department offers high quality care to all people with diabetes, regardless of age, gender or ethnic group, to enable every person with diabetes to live a healthy and fulfilled life.
We receive referrals from across the country as we are a centre of excellence for patients with Type 1 diabetes. The department works closely with other hospital departments, other local healthcare organisations and primary care colleagues. As well as consultant clinics and a multidisciplinary foot clinic, there are also several nurse-led clinics each week.
