Our tissue viability team provide a specialist nursing service across the Royal Free London, leading on expert wound assessment and management, advice and support for both staff and patients on all aspects of complex wound prevention, and healing.

The team’s areas of expertise include:

  • chronic wound care
  • leg ulceration and pressure ulceration
  • acute and traumatic wounds
  • surgical wound care
  • palliative wound care
  • chronic oedema
  • lymphoedema

The service works closely with our medical and surgical teams and other services, including surgical appliances and orthotics, plastic nurse specialists, and the dermatology, diabetes, and vascular surgery teams, as well as community tissue viability and district and general practitioner services.

Team members pride themselves on providing up-to-date evidence-based wound care education, aiming to be world class leaders in complex wound management and treatment. 

Our trust has a zero-tolerance policy on all avoidable pressure damage — the tissue viability service support this by providing in-house training for all our staff. They also provide hands-on training and education for frontline staff.
