Supporting families in Enfield and Haringey with free child first aid courses
Supporting families in Enfield and Haringey with free child first aid courses
Our free courses provide parents and carers with essential lifesaving skills and health knowledge to better care for their children.
Becoming a parent is a life-changing experience, full of joy and challenges. For many, it can also feel overwhelming, isolating, and stressful without the right support.
At ABC Parents, we are here to empower you. Our mission is to equip parents and carers with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to keep their children healthy and safe.
Join us to build confidence, connect with other parents, and gain the tools to navigate parenthood with greater ease.
Thanks to our funding from North Central London Integrated Care Board, we especially want to support families where social or financial pressures are making it harder to be a parent. We are a welcoming community of parents and no matter what your circumstances are, we don’t judge you. We have more than 20 languages spoken among our various groups.
We offer free courses designed to teach child health and lifesaving skills in a supportive, friendly environment.
Why we offer free courses
Parents visiting our emergency department (A&E) tell us how frightening they feel it is when their child becomes unwell. They wish they knew what to do and when. Our interactive and relaxed courses are designed by parents and staff. We aim to address parents’ concerns, help them feel confident and know how to handle accidents or emergencies.
By taking part in our free course, you’ll learn:
- First aid and lifesaving skills: learn what to do in emergencies like choking, burns, head injuries and allergic reactions.
- CPR practice: master baby and child resuscitation techniques with hands-on training.
- When and where to seek help: get useful online resources, understand when to call 111, visit a pharmacy, contact your GP or Health Visitor. Know when an urgent care centre, or A&E trip are needed.
- Managing childhood illnesses: learn about fevers, colds, sepsis, meningitis, bronchiolitis, and vaccinations.
- Accident prevention: learn how to minimise risks at home and keep your child safe.
- Safe sleeping for babies: discover best practices for ensuring your baby’s safety while they sleep.
- Local resources: access advice and support for financial difficulties, housing issues, mental health, isolation and build a network around you.
You also gain:
- Confidence: feel prepared, feel empowered, know you’re not alone and learn from others.
- Connection: meet other local families and share experiences.
- Networks: meet our supportive champions, join our ABC Parents networks, volunteer with us and build up your community links.
- Resources: receive reliable information tailored to your needs.
- Answers: your chance to ask questions, address any concerns and get support.

Having an unwell or premature baby can be scary, traumatic and make you feel lonely. We invite parents who recently had their baby admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to join our parents' group each Thursday at 12noon.
Parents with babies on sunrise neonatal unit can join in person (in the quiet room) or online.
We meet each week to offer our support, advice, and a listening ear because we know how hard a baby on NICU can be. The maternity neonatal voice partnership in collaboration with ABC Parents and NICU staff will be present each week.
Join online to share your experiences, ask questions, and our ABC champions, who also had babies at NICU, can help you.
What should I do in the group?
- You can stay for the full hour or just drop in.
- Ask questions.
- Share stories, worries, and struggles.
- Celebrate your baby's progress.
- Talk about what is important to you.
- Just listen if you are not yet ready to talk.
- Ask for help.

Our target, in collaboration with Resus Council UK, is to increase the number of lifesavers in poorer parts of the UK, especially in minority ethnic groups. Fewer than one in ten survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Read the Resuscitation Council UK website on tackling inequalities in resuscitation.

Cardiac arrest in babies and children is not common. However, it can happen through drowning or swallowing a small item like a button battery – so it’s still crucial for parents, caregivers, and anyone who interacts with children to know what to do in an emergency and help save a child’s life,” says James Cant, RCUK's CEO
If you are a registered doctor, nurse, or health professional working in the UK, and have experience of teaching, training parents, working with families or keen to learn, please contact us.
You need to be available to train and commit to at least six hours each month for one year.
