The Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) provides high-quality care and treatment to pregnant women — and up to one year after having a baby — who have mental health difficulties that are moderate to severe.

The team also offers a one-off appointment for pre-conception advice to women who have a history of severe mental illness and are considering having a baby.

The North London Partners Specialist PMHS encompasses five boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington) and the five maternity units in theses boroughs (at Barnet Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital, University College Hospital and Whittington Hospital).

Outpatient appointments will be provided at different locations within the five boroughs, and home visits can also be arranged if required.

Our service has a dedicated specialist mental health team comprising of consultant psychiatrists, specialist perinatal nurses and clinical psychology.

If admission is required, there are three mother and baby units (MBUs) in London that can be referred to in the first instance, as well as other MBUs nearby, including in Hertfordshire.

The following clinicians can refer to this service: GPs, health and social care professionals, community psychiatrists, obstetricians, midwives, health visitors and social workers.
