Anaesthetics

Overview

Anaesthesia is a loss of consciousness that is brought about by liquid or gas anaesthetic drugs to ensure you are unaware of surgery taking place. The anaesthetics department at the Royal Free London is responsible for anaesthetic services across our 35 operating theatres at Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

Alongside our three hospitals, our anaesthetists provide support for two day surgery theatres at Edgware Community Hospital, and for some procedures at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital.

Our anaesthetics team is also responsible for the provision of pain relief before, during and after surgical procedures and is closely involved in all aspects of resuscitation of very ill and severely injured patients.
