What is anaesthesia?

Many operations require our patients to be asleep, unaware and still. To achieve this we administer anaesthesia. Our job as anaesthetists is to do this in the safest way possible and to support the body systems while surgery is ongoing. The safety of our patients is always our main concern and we work tirelessly to achieve this, liaising with our surgeons and other members of the multidisciplinary team with the aim of ensuring a positive outcome for our patients.

In this large, pioneering and cutting edge department we are always striving for improvements in clinical care. We are fortunate to have over 100 consultant anaesthetists from multiple training backgrounds providing a wealth of experience and expertise. We work closely with the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland to ensure that we are at the cutting edge of patient safety and perioperative medicine. We have a strong research base, with many clinical trials ongoing as we attempt to advance this field of medicine.
