AAA screening programme

Overview

The Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening programme (AAA) for the five boroughs of North Central  London.

Men aged 65 and over who are registered with a GP in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey or Islington can attend a free screening appointment in a local hospital or Primary Care Health Centre.

The aorta is the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. In some people, as they get older, the wall of the aorta in the abdomen can become weak. It can then start to expand and form what is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The condition is most common in men aged 65 and above. If you have an aneurysm you will generally not notice any symptoms.

We offer screening so we can find aneurysms early and monitor or treat them. This greatly reduces the chances of the aneurysm causing serious problems.

How do I get an appointment?

AAA screening is offered to all men in the year they turn 65. You will automatically be invited by invitation letter.

Men over 65 can self refer into the programme by contacting us by phone or email.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

If you need to change or cancel your appointment for any reason, please phone 0800 804 8002 or 0207 317 7711 or email rf.nclaaascreening@nhs.net

At your appointment

Appointments last approximately 20 minutes. A technician will talk you through the process, the possible outcomes and check your personal details.

The technician will then conduct an ultrasound scan of your abdomen. The scan is quick and painless, and you will be told the result straight away.

If any further scans are needed or a referral to our vascular team is recommended you will be informed, and we will contact you by phone and letter with details of the next appointment.

Patients with normal results will be discharged from the service, and will not need to attend again.

After your appointment

A copy of the results will be sent to your GP.

If you have any queries regarding the appointment or results please contact the team on 0800 804 8002 or 0207 317 7711.
