Edgware Birth Centre
Welcome to Edgware birth centre
We are a standalone midwife-led birth centre located in Edgware Community Hospital. Our birth centre is run by dedicated and passionate caseloading midwives who offer a home-from-home setting that creates a warm and welcoming environment for you to have your baby. We are the only trust in London to offer all 4 birthing place options; home, standalone birth centre, alongside birth centre and delivery suite.
At Edgware birth centre you will have two midwives to support you throughout labour and the immediate postnatal period. We are an alternative birth setting to home and our Heath and Barnet Birth centres (alongside midwifery unit), promoting tailored birth preferences that best suit you and your family. Research from the Birth Place Study (2011) shows you will have an 81% chance of a vaginal birth at a freestanding midwife led unit compared to 76.5% at an alongside midwifery unit. You are also less likely to have an episiotomy, instrumental birth, and caesarean section when starting your labour with us.
If any complications arise during your birth or postnatal period we would transfer via ambulance to the local obstetric unit, your midwife caring for you will transfer with you.
If you have a straight-forward pregnancy, with no medical or obstetric problems, and go into labour between 37-42 weeks we would be happy to help facilitate your birth at our birth centre.
We also provide antenatal, labour and postnatal care for women and birthing people who fall outside of our trust geographical patch that choose to birth with us.
After you have given birth to your baby, the midwives will support you in the immediate postnatal period with infant feeding and caring for your baby. All babies are offered the New-born Infant Physical Examination (NIPE). This can be facilitated at the Edgware birth centre and the hearing test will be made as an outpatient appointment. This reduces the time you need to stay in the birth centre.
We have 3 birthing suites: Lotus, Aster, and Cosmos. All of them have birthing pools and ensuite facilities. We also provide:
- peanut balls
- birthing balls
- pull out beds for partners to rest on
- aromatherapy diffusers (you will need to provide essential oils)
- electric candles
- mood lighting
- comfortable upright birthing stool
- kitchen area for refreshments
- access to our birth centre private garden
- Bluetooth speaker
