Children’s anaesthesia and pain relief
The children’s surgical service is run by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, with registered children’s nurses who are experienced in the care of children having surgery. Children and their parents are supported by our play team, who help children get better by showing them how to cope with their situation and keeping them occupied with games, toys and activities.
Surgery is carried out at Barnet Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital; both hospitals also provide a consultant delivered anaesthetic service. In addition, we offer a pain service which is experienced in managing the ongoing pain needs of children.
Our pre-operative assessment service is run by children’s nurses and supported by children’s anaesthetists. When your child has been booked to have an operation, an appointment will be made for you and your child to attend pre-operative assessment. This is to help prepare you all for the planned surgery and to identify any medical problems.

We aim to make your experience of bringing your child for surgery as smooth and worry-free as possible.
